What to do when Template's parent site is deleted? ​

The parent site is the site a template or snapshot syncs its content from. If that site is deleted or expires, you can no longer sync changes into the template, which is a problem when you use it to keep product demos up to date.

You do not need to create a new template. You can point the same template at a new parent site, so it keeps its name, slug and share links.

This works the same way for templates and snapshots.

Before you start ​

Only a site that was created from this template can become its new parent. Expired and deleted sites do not count.

If you do not have one yet, the dialog below offers a Create a site from this template button that opens the site creation dialog with the template already selected. Create the site, make any changes you need on it, then come back to these steps.

Step 1: Open Sync from Site ​

Go to the Templates page (or Snapshots), click the vertical ellipsis on the template whose parent is gone, and select Sync from Site.

The Sync Changes from Parent Site dialog opens. Because the current parent is no longer available, it tells you so and asks you to select a new parent site to sync from.

Step 2: Choose the new parent site ​

Open the Parent Site dropdown and pick the site you want to sync from. If you have more than ten eligible sites, you can search the list.

If the dialog shows No site can be used as a parent instead of a dropdown, none of your sites qualify yet. Use Create a site from this template, then reopen the dialog.

Step 3: Change the parent and sync ​

Click Change Parent & Sync. InstaWP takes a fresh copy of the selected site into your template, and once that finishes, the selected site becomes the template's parent for every future sync.

You can switch a template to a different parent this way at any time, not only after the old one is deleted. When you leave the parent unchanged, the same button reads Sync Now and simply re-syncs from the current parent.

While you are changing the parent, Save & Sync is disabled so the new selection cannot be dropped by accident. Update your automatic sync settings after the parent change has finished.
