Create & Update Team
A Team is how you group sites and collaborators inside InstaWP. Every site you create belongs to a team, and a team is also your billing boundary.
In this documentation, we will explore:
Let's get started 🚀
How team billing works
New teams use pay-as-you-go billing: there is no fixed monthly fee, and the team is charged only for what it actually uses. You can create multiple teams and add team members on pay-as-you-go, and neither is locked behind a higher plan.
Three things are worth knowing before you invite anyone:
The team owner pays for the whole team. Sites created by any member of a team are billed to that team owner's payment method, not to the member who created them. Adding someone to your team gives them the ability to spend on your account, so only invite people you trust, and use the team member roles to limit what they can do.
The team owner needs a valid payment method. If the owner has no payment method on file, members of that team will not be able to create new sites.
Billing is per team, not per account. If you belong to more than one team, your available limits and usage follow the team you are currently switched into. Switching teams switches the billing context along with it.
If you are an older customer on a legacy subscription plan, see Legacy plans and pay-as-you-go below.
Create a New Team
Sign in to your InstaWP account, click your team name in the top bar, and select Create New.

On the Create Team screen, set your Team Name. The team owner's name and email are filled in automatically and cannot be edited here. You can also upload a team profile image with Change.
New teams are created on pay-as-you-go billing, so the team is charged only for what it uses.

Click Create. If your account also has older subscription-based teams, InstaWP confirms the billing model before creating the team. Click Create again to confirm.

This takes you to your newly created team's settings page.
Update a Team
You can manage a team from its settings page. Click your team name in the top bar, then the settings (gear) icon next to the team, or go to Settings → Team.
The settings page is made up of the following sections:
Team Name
View the team owner's name and email, rename the team, and set a team profile image. Teams on pay-as-you-go show a "Pay as you go billing has been activated for this team" notice here.

Click Save to apply your changes.
Store Profile
Set a slug and description for your public store page. This applies if you sell templates on the InstaWP store.

Tags Manager
Manage the site tags available to this team. For more information, refer to the Add Tags documentation.

White Label
Serve every site in this team from your own custom suffix domain instead of the default InstaWP domain. Turn on Enable White Label and add your domain. For the full setup, refer to Add Whitelabel / Suffix Domain.

Custom Hostnames
Once your white-label suffix domain is verified, an additional Custom Hostnames section appears on this page. It lets you supply your own list of nouns and adjectives, which InstaWP then combines to generate hostnames for new sites, so new site URLs follow your naming style instead of the default random one.
Add team members
Adding people to a team, the roles you can give them, and pending invitations are all covered in Add Team Member. Read How team billing works first, because a member's usage is charged to you.
Delete a Team
Deleting a team permanently removes the team along with all of its resources and data, including its sites. Download anything you want to keep first, because this cannot be undone.

Click Delete Team and confirm to proceed.
Legacy plans and pay-as-you-go
If your account predates pay-as-you-go, some of your teams may still be on an older subscription plan. A few things to be aware of:
- Billing model is set per team. One account can hold both legacy subscription teams and pay-as-you-go teams at the same time. The limits you see always belong to the team you are currently switched into.
- Legacy teams have fixed limits. Older subscription plans cap how many teams and team members you get, so you may see a lower remaining-members count on those teams than on a pay-as-you-go team.
- If a legacy subscription ends, its teams move to pay-as-you-go automatically. When a subscription is cancelled or lapses, the teams it covered switch to pay-as-you-go billing on their own, and the teams and their sites are not deleted. This move is one-way.
When your account has at least one legacy team, the Create Team screen shows a "Use Pay as you go billing model for this team" toggle so you can choose which model a new team should use.
| 💡 Did you know - You can create a website from a private template, which can be used only by you or your team and is not accessible to guest users. Learn how to create a site from a private template using APIs.
