Update domain contact details

Every domain you register through InstaWP has a registrant contact attached to it — the name, email, phone number and address of the person or company that owns the domain. Registrars use these details for renewal reminders, transfer approvals and verification notices, so it's worth keeping them accurate.

You can review and update them any time from the Contacts tab of your domain, and switch on WHOIS privacy protection to keep them out of public WHOIS lookups.

In this documentation, we will explore the steps to:

Open the Contacts tab

Step 1: Log in to your InstaWP account, click Domains in the left sidebar, then click the domain you want to update.

Step 2: Open the Contacts tab. You'll see the current Registrant Contact details in read-only form. Click Edit in the top-right corner of the card to make them editable.

Step 3: Update the fields you need. The card holds the full registrant record:

FieldNotes
First name / Last nameName of the domain owner.
EmailWhere renewal and verification notices are sent.
Phone NumberInclude the country code, e.g. +15550123456.
OrganizationCompany name. Leave blank for a personal domain.
AddressStreet address.
CountryDropdown.
State/ProvinceDropdown, filtered by the selected country.
CityDropdown, filtered by the selected state.
Postal codeZIP / postal code.

💡 Tip: State/Province and City are searchable dropdowns — click one and start typing to filter the list. Because the options depend on the level above them, changing your Country clears the state and city selections, so set them from the top down.

Save your changes

Step 4: Click Save Changes to apply the update. The card returns to read-only mode showing the new details.

Clicking Cancel instead discards everything you typed and leaves the existing contact details untouched.

Enable WHOIS privacy protection

Below the registrant contact you'll find Privacy Protection. WHOIS is a public directory — without privacy protection, the registrant details above can be looked up by anyone.

Step 5: Toggle Privacy Protection on to replace your personal details in public WHOIS records with the registrar's privacy service. Toggle it off to publish them again.

💡 Tip: Privacy protection only hides your details from public WHOIS lookups. InstaWP and the registrar still keep the real contact information on file, and renewal notices continue to go to the email address you set above — so make sure it's one you actually read.
